  • Adobe Creative Cloud: Premiere Pro

    Adobe Creative Cloud is a whole suite of professional design software. For video-editors, you have access to professional tools such as Premiere Pro and After Effects. This software has a wealth of tools, and it takes some time to learn the techniques, lots of online tutorials. Available on Windows, Mac OS, simplified versions on Mac iOS and Android. Premiere Pro Elements is a simplified, easier version, good for beginners (one payment of $145). Student price of $22 a month (requires education email address)/ regular price $78 a month for the whole suite.

  • DaVinci Resolve

    Davinci Resolve is free, very high quality editing and post-production software, offered by Black Magic Design. This software is used by professionals is a broad variety of media sectors. Lots of detailed features, takes a while to master. Free to download, available on Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Davinci Resolve Studio available for $295, with enhanced features.

  • Lightworks

    Lightworks Create is easy to use video editing software, that is popular amongst social media users that need to produce short clips every day. Lightworks Pro is more detailed editing software, used in feature films. Available on Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Sign in required, free version available. Lightworks Create is US $10 a month, Lightworks Pro is US $24 a month. Student, teacher and non-profit receive 50% discount.

  • Filmora

    Filmora is a very accessible video editing software, aimed at making short, engaging videos. Filmora is the basic program, whereas Filmora Pro has more advanced features. Available on Windows and Mac OS, free trial available. Filmora costs US$50 a year, or US$80 perpetual. Filmora Pro costs US$90 a year, or US$150 perpetual.

  • Microsoft Video Editor

    The most basic of video editor, a lot of people don’t realise that it is hidden away in the Photos app already on their computer. Good for beginners, it does have some distinct limitations. NOTE: Windows 11 is now including ClipChamp, a video editor with lots of video editing features. Free with Windows.

  • Canva

    Canva is known as an online graphics design platform, but it also has an online video editor. There are a lots of social-media style templates which can be uploaded directly onto sites like YouTube, TikTok and Facebook. If Canva is something you already use, this might be good for you. Canva can be downloaded onto Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. Canva is free to use, login required to save documents. Canva Pro unlocks useful features, costs $165 a year for five users. 30-day free trial.

  • Storyblocks.com

    Storyblocks is a site where video footage, music files and images can be downloaded royalty-free, and used in your video projects. Basic Video subscription is AU$15 a month, Unlimited Video is AU$30 a month, Unlimited All Access is AU$50 a month. The platform also now has an online video editor available, as part of All Access.
